Over the past 25 years the GEMS Pty Ltd Environmental Training Team has developed an excellent sense of what is needed for an effective environmental training program.

In a most recent training initiative, for example, more than 600 operational personnel from Downer EDI Mining completed our two day nationally accredited Advanced Environmental Awareness Course.

The bulk of participants in this training program were operational personnel. Prior to the training they made it clear that they were less than enthusiastic about being required to complete a two day “greenie course”.

Post-training evaluation revealed:

  • 95% of participants either strongly agreed (60%) or agreed (35%) that they have a better understanding of what environmental due diligence is all about and how it relates to their work
  • 96% of participants either strongly agreed (57%) or agreed (39%) that they have a better understanding of Downer EDI Mining’s environmental responsibilities and the systems they have put in place to meet those responsibilities
  • 96% of participants either strongly agreed (46%) or agreed (50%) that they have a better understanding of what they need to do in order to meet their environmental responsibilities at work
  • 98% of participants either strongly agreed (48%) or agreed (50%) that they have a better understanding of the different components of Downer EDI Mining’s Environmental Management System
  • 96% of participants either strongly agreed (47%) or agreed (49%) that they have a better understanding of who they need to speak with in relation to raising matters of environmental concern or suggesting improvements in environmental management
  • 99% of participants either strongly agreed (45%) or agreed (54%) that they have a better understanding of some of the programs the company is putting in place in order to reduce the environmental risk of our activities

These are outstanding results and ones we have replicated through all of our training programs in recent times.
